Ayurvedic Hair Care

No matter what type of hair nature blessed you with, there are things you can do to keep it healthy, lustrous, looking its best. Here are some tips for a healthy head of hair from the tradition of Ayurveda, the 5,000-year old system of holistic healing that originated in India:

 

1.Include lots of green leafy vegetables and sweet juicy fruits. Dairy products such as milk and fresh yogurt will also help. Fresh coconut is also considered excellent "hair food" -- sprinkle grated coconut over salads, diced fresh fruit, or rice.

 

2.Cut down on refined, processed and canned foods. Ayurveda considers foods with artificial preservatives and chemical additives.

 

3. Cooking with certain spices adds flavor to your food and provides nourishment for your hair. Cumin, turmeric and black pepper are some "hair-friendly" spices. 

 

4. Stress can be seriously injurious to long-term health and color of hair. Try and manage your time and tasks to minimize time-related pressures.

 

5. Ayurvedic herbs that help hair health include Eclipta alba and Gotu Kola. Eclipta alba is called "Bhringaraj" -- literally, king of tresses. It nourishes the hair and helps resistance to stress as well. Brahmi, sometimes called Gotu Kola, also helps balance the mind and nourishes the hair and scalp.

 

6. Stay away from harsh chemical topical products that can damage hair over time. Look for gentle, natural cleansers and conditioners, especially if you wash your hair more than three times a week. Shampoos and conditioners that contain nourishing botanicals are even better.

 

7. Never comb wet hair with a brush, no matter how rushed for time you are. Tangles in wet hair are best removed with a wide-toothed comb. Use a wooden comb if you can find one; it won't generate static electricity. Excessive blow-drying can damage hair in the long-term, making it brittle and causing split ends. If you can, let your hair dry naturally, then brush into place.

 

8. Last, but not least, brushing your hair regularly to stimulate the scalp will keep it looking healthy and lustrous. Brush each night in all directions in turn -- left to right, right to left, front to back and back to front. Use smooth long strokes from scalp to hairtips.

 

       

 

Other Useful Tips:

  • Beer Is good for the hair-----True
    Pale ale makes an excellent setting lotion. Apply it to the hair before putting in rollers or blow drying.

  • Brushing hair 100 times at night makes it shine-----True
    Thorough brushing stimulates the oil glands in the scalp and makes the hair shinier than normal. However, too much brushing can split and thin the hair.

  • Baldness is a sign of virility-----False
    Baldness may be partly caused by the male sex hormone testosterone circulation in the body. It can therefore be regarded as a sign of virility by those who wish to do so. But men with full heads of hair can be just as virile as those who are bald.

  • Hair can turn white overnight-----False
    Because of the slow growth of hair----about 13mm a month----it is impossible for anyone to go white overnight from shock or grief.

  • Singeing the hair makes it grow-----False
    Visible hair is made up of dead cells and singeing only causes split ends. Live hair is under the skin and is unaffected by singeing.

  • Hair continues to grow after death-----False
    The shrinkage of skin surrounding the hair follicles might reveal a further 1.5mm or so of hair after death, but hair growth----like nail growth----ends once the body stops functioning.

Ayurvedic Skin Care

According to Ayurveda, all the activities of mind and body are
governed by three psycho physiological energies known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When these three principles within us are in perfect balance, we enjoy good health. If one or more of these energies within us is aggravated or out of balance, disorders result.

Each of these principles is also associated with a season. Winter is the season when Vata rides higher than usual in most people's physiologies. During these months, generally from mid-October to mid-February, the qualities associated with Vata—dry, rough, cool—tend to increase in the physiology. Increased Vata can thus result in dry flaky skin, chapped lips and dry, brittle hair. If you are already prone to these imbalances, winter will generally see an aggravation of the conditions.

 

         

 

Here are some ways to keep Vata dosha in balance and prevent Vata-associated skin problems:

1. Avoid exposing skin to harsh winter elements such as
freezing temperatures and drying cold winds. Dress warmly, in
layers, and wear a hat, scarf and gloves when you go out in cold
weather. Wear a natural lip balm to protect your lips. A light layer of ghee (clarified butter) can also work as natural lip protection.

2. Protect facial skin from both cold winds and drying air from heaters with a rich natural moisturizer. Apply the moisturizer at least twice a day, once after your cleansing routine in the morning and again before you go to bed. Always apply moisturizer on clean skin. Your hands can also benefit from the application of the moisturizer.

 

3. Three or four times a week, offer dry facial and body skin additional lipid support with a replenishing oil.

 

4. The pre-bath warm oil self-massage, called abhyanga, is a must-do in winter. The massage not only keeps your skin silky smooth, it also tones the muscles, calms the nerves and aids circulation. Pat excess oil off with a paper towel before you step into the bath or shower. Use a nourishing oil such as almond or sesame oil for the massage.

 

5. The skin on your feet tends to dry and crack more in winter. Treat your feet to a relaxing soak at night, three times a week. A quick foot bath can be made in a large, wide-mouthed bowl with warm water, sea salts, Epsom salt and two or three drops of your favorite aroma oil. After the soak, rub in an herbal lotion, some shea butter or some almond oil on your feet. This ritual will not only keep your feet looking good, it will also help you ease into sleep.

 

6. Do not bathe or shower in very hot water. Warm water is much gentler on your skin. Do not bathe more than once a day if your skin is very dry.

 

7. Do not use harsh soaps to cleanse, as they will strip your skin of precious lipids. Use a non-soap cleanser or very mild soap to cleanse.

 

8. Give your skin lipid support from within by including soaked and blanched almonds, soaked walnuts, whole milk, fresh cheese, and ghee (clarified butter) in your diet. Drink a cup of warm milk laced with 1/4 teaspoon ghee at bedtime for a daily boost of lipid support.

 

9. Eat fruits and vegetables high in water content at every meal. Zucchini and other summer squashes, tender asparagus, tender greens, and carrots make excellent vegetable choices. Sweet juicy berries, cooked apples and sweet grapes are good fruit choices. Drink lots of warm water through the day.

 

10. The Amla fruit (Indian Gooseberry) is the richest known natural source of vitamin C. Herbs such as Amla provide concentrated nourishment to the deeper layers of the skin. Take Amla, also known as Amalaki, on a regular basis to replenish skin from within.

Remember that a holistic approach will yield the best results.

Try and incorporate as many of the above suggestions as you can to keep Vata dosha in balance and your skin looking smooth, soft and beautiful through the dry winter months.

Ayurvedic Nail Care

Your nails are an important part of your hands and they too need to be taken care of well. Well-kept hands with neat, clean, painted nails are a pleasure to behold. Dirty and unkept nails will make your hands look ugly. Your nails need to be strong and healthy for your hands to look beautiful.

 

Here are a few tips on nail care.

  • To harden soft nails soak them in warm olive oil for about 20 minutes on alternate days.

  • For strong nails soak them in a mixture of horsetail.

  • To remove stains from your nails, mix one tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup of water and soak your nails in this liquid for a few minutes.

  • It is not a good idea to remove the cuticles from your nail, as it will make the nail susceptible to infection.

  • If you use nail polish then do not use acetone polish removers.

  • When you wear nail polish, give your nails a break from time to time. Leave them without polish for a few days.

  • For natural nail polish rub petroleum jelly on your nails then buff with a soft cloth.

 

       

 

If you have brittle nails or split or dull nails then here are a few vitamins that will help you:

  • Organic Silica: this will increase the growth of nails and prevent them from becoming brittle.

  • Essential Fatty Acids: Found in most oils are good for healthy and strong nails.

  • Vitamin B especially B5: Important for healthy skin and nails.

  • MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane): important for healthy nails.

 Ayurvedic  Eye Care

Do you eyes feel tired and sore by the end of the day? Modern life puts a lot of stress on our bodies and eyes are among the first things to suffer. But it doesn't have to be this way.

 

         

 

1. Have your eyes checked every 12 month

Uncorrected vision problems can progress, and wearing corrective contact lenses or glasses that are no longer right for you can cause vision problems and severe headaches. If your contacts don't feel right in your eyes, it is probably time to visit an eye doctor, even if it hasn't been a year since your last visit.

 

2. Go for the best quality contact lenses

Not all contact lenses are equal. Some are safe for you, while others put you at risk of damaging your eyes.

 

3. In summer, always wear sunglasses

It is proven that UV rays can seriously damage your eyes, but good sunglasses can prevent this damage. When buying sunglasses, make sure that they block at least 98% of UV radiation. By the way, did you know that you need sunglasses on cloudy days as well? Clouds might provide shade, but they are no barrier for UV light. Clouds are basically water, and water is UV-transparent.

Finally, remember that you would need sunglasses even if your contact lenses offer UV protection. Even a very high quality lens can only protect the area it covers, but the entire surface of your eye needs protection.

 

4. Eat what is good for you and your eyes

Vitamins C, A and E, folic acid, selenium and zinc are definitely beneficial for the health of your eyes.

 

5. When you read or work on the computer make sure that the light is right

It is a common knowledge that working with poor light can cause eyestrain, but light that is too bright can do as much damage.

Keep your blinds down on sunny days and switch off half of the household lights, if possible. The best lighting for working on the computer is a soft desk light, coming from the side. Also, you can try decreasing the brightness of your monitor. The colors won't be so vivid, but your eyes will feel much better by the end of the day

 

6. Give your eyes a health break

People blink about 25% less often then usual, while working at the computer, which causes eye dryness. One thing you can do, though, is close your eyes and count to 5 before opening them, whenever your computer decides to take its sweet time doing something. Another thing is to look away from the screen and focus on some faraway object, as often as possible.

 

7. If you wear contact lenses, take proper care of them

Contact lenses don't require a lot or fuss, but you can't neglect their cleanliness. Every time you put your lenses in or take them out, rinse them. You should also take care to change the solution, when you are putting your lenses to rest for the night.

Ayurvedic  Feet Care

Our feet are often the least pampered parts of our bodies. Here are some suggestions from AYURVEDA, the ancient science of healing from India, for taking care of your feet on a regular basis.

 

         

 

1. During your pre-bath Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga), pay special attention to your feet. Massage the feet, each toe, the ankles, the heels and the soles in turn with the warm oil, gently stretching the feet and toes as you massage them and using circular motions around your ankles and heels.

 

2. During your bath or shower, let your feet enjoy warm water for a few minutes, then cleanse with a gentle, non-irritating cleanser and a foot brush or washcloth, working between the toes and scrubbing the heels to slough off dead skin. Use a neem based cleanser to help rid feet of odor or bacteria.

 

3. Once a week, apply a natural exfoliating mixture on your feet, especially on the heels and soles, when you cleanse, to remove hardened dead skin.

 

4. Follow basic rules of comfort. Wear footwear that fits properly and is roomy enough so that no part of your foot feels pinched. Do not wear high heels except when you absolutely have to. Replace shoes before they wear out or become lopsided with use. Wear cotton socks indoors to protect your feet from the cold. When the temperature is comfortable and you are indoors, walk barefoot occasionally to allow your feet to breathe.

 

5. Every night foot and lower leg massage not only relaxes the feet, it also helps promote restful sleep.

Look at your hands now and tell yourself what you see? Beautifull and gorgeous hands are so important. Hands tells everything about yourself, how you live your life and love your body. They say that hands give a woman's age away, well so what! But gorgeous hands are the carriers of your personality, no matter in what situation and age you are.

You wear fancy designer clothes, imagine the negative effects if you combine these fancy clothes with abandoned hands.

 

       

  • The skin of the hand is so thin, protect the skin.

  • Pamper your hands with your personal hand lotion, 4 times a day.

  • Exfoliate once a week with a face exfoliater.

  • Use once a week your face night cream also on your hands before you go to sleep.

  • Get accustomed to using rubber gloves whenever you do housework.

  • Prevent your hands from aging or abusing.

  • Protect your hands from dry weather as well as protecting them from the sun.

  • Use daily a protective barrier.
